I study violence.
While analyzing real altercations, two things kept jumping out at me. Trained people rarely displayed the complex motor skills they practiced — technique went out the window. Untrained people who survived real violent encounters did it through indignation and primal aggression.
I started visualizing how our caveman ancestors fought, thousands of years before martial arts existed. And in 1987, while I was developing the SPEAR System®, I landed on the question that’s driven my work ever since: What does the body want to do, before any training at all? Does that instinct have a protective quality? If it does, why aren’t we building on it instead of overriding it?
That’s the first principle: use the organic assets. Whatever the body already does under threat, without being taught, is the fastest thing you’ll ever have access to — because it doesn’t have to be learned, it just has to be allowed. Decades later, neuroscience confirmed it: nothing is faster than the startle-flinch response.
We are all human weapons. Deep inside, we already know how to defend ourselves.
We’ve either forgotten, or we’re confusing self-defense with martial arts — assuming we need to study martial arts to survive violence. That’s like confusing going to med school with taking a first-aid course. (I’m a lifelong martial artist myself. I’m not anti-martial arts.)
Here’s our collective reframe: self-defense can and should be taught like an emergency first-aid course. Learn the principles of situational awareness and fear management. Add verbal deescalation to the mix. Balance it with primal gross motor movement — because biology isn’t something you fight, it’s something you work with.
Master these three stages — the 3 D’s — and you exponentially improve your chances of detecting, avoiding, and surviving a violent encounter. That’s the singular goal of true self-defense.
Detect.
Defuse.
Defend.
Imagine if you could weaponize what your body already wants to do.
Well — guess what. You can.
And that’s exactly what I want to teach you.
