I Study Violence.
I was fascinated by two observations while analyzing real altercations, true violent encounters:
1. “Trained” people, when attacked, rarely displayed the complex motor skills they practiced. And often their complex motor skill ‘technique’ went right out the window.
2. “Untrained” people, when attacked, were able to survive by relying on their primal aggression.
This inspired me and I thought deeply about what was happening.
Epiphany
One day I found myself imagining & visualizing how our caveman ancestors fought so many thousands of years ago - long, long before martial arts were developed.
How Did Cavemen Fight?
Their fights were true survival events. No ego fights, road rage, or drunk bar fights. Right?
Cavemen fought over food and shelter. (Watch a few episodes of The Walking Dead to understand what people will do for food.)
Cavemen survived using their instincts and intuition. They trusted the fear spikes and used fear as fuel to escape or engage.
And when a fight happened - it was mano a mano and it certainly had to be fueled by primal aggression! Right?
How do I know?
Because there were no Caveman Kung Fu or Caveman Karate studios! 😉👊
Cavemen relied on the ultimate survival system, the human weapon system!
Caveman Combatives is completely organic.
Here’s a recap of how they had to have fought:
Cavemen relied on their instincts & intuition to avoid, evade or engage danger.
They used fear as fuel - defeat meant death.
They used natural movement to protect themselves and their tribes.
Their tactical choices were practical. Nothing fancy (as fancy or complicated didn’t exist at this time).
They relied on primal gross motor movement which was bio-mechanically sound (even though there was no CrossFit, or exercise science courses available).
This visualization and meditation made me smile and helped me refine our SPEAR System®, into a truly organic, natural, and instinctive approach to making people safer.
FUN FACT
3400 BC is approx. 5400 years ago.
Modern Man began roaming the planet 70,000 - 100,000 years ago.
Violence predates organized martial arts by approx. 90,000 years.

A Modern Method To Protect Yourself During Sudden Violence
We are all human weapons.
Deep inside, we all know how to defend ourselves.
We've either forgotten or we're confusing self-defense with martial arts and accidentally assuming we need to study martial arts to be able to survive violence. (Remember, I am a lifelong martial artist, I'm not anti-martial arts.)
That's like confusing the NEED to go to med school with the value of a good first-aid course.
OUR REFRAME:
Self-defense can & should be taught like an emergency first-aid course.
Learn principles of situational awareness and fear management.
Add verbal de-escalation to the recipe.
Balance the training with primal gross motor movement.
Learn these 3 stages, and you exponentially improve your chances of detecting & avoiding, and surviving a violent encounter.
And that's the singular goal of true self-defense.
DETECT
DEFUSE
DEFEND
That's been our recipe for over 4 decades.
And we know it works, it's how people fought before martial arts were created.

FIRST MARTIAL ART
The earliest evidence for specifics of martial arts as practiced in the past comes from depictions of fights, both in figurative art and in early literature, besides analysis of archaeological evidence, especially of weaponry. The oldest work of art depicting scenes of battle, dating back 3400 BC,[1] was the Ancient Egyptian paintings showing some form of struggle.
When did modern humans appear?
Bones of primitive Homo sapiens first appear 300,000 years ago in Africa, with brains as large or larger than ours. They’re followed by anatomically modern Homo sapiens at least 200,000 years ago, and brain shape became essentially modern by at least 100,000 years ago.
When did the first modern humans roam the Earth?
The first modern humans began moving outside of Africa starting about 70,000-100,000 years ago. Humans are the only known species to have successfully populated, adapted to, and significantly altered a wide variety of land regions across the world, resulting in profound historical and environmental impacts.
