How Does the SPEAR System® Handle a Jab?
If you’ve ever asked this, you’re not wrong — but you’re looking at the wrong part of the fight.
If you’ve ever asked, “How does the SPEAR System® handle a jab or a cross?” This is for you.
It’s a fair question.
But it’s also the wrong question.
That question reveals a deeper misunderstanding about real violence — and here’s why:
When someone asks that, they’re seeing violence through a rigid, idealistic lens — one shaped by martial arts demos, predictable mechanics, and combat sport structure.
But real fights aren’t like that.
Real violence doesn’t start with a jab.
And if you think it does, you either haven’t experienced sudden violence — or you’ve confused consensual violence with something else entirely.
I won’t break it all down here — that’s what the video below is for.
But if you want to actually understand how real violence unfolds, watch closely.
This isn’t about kung fu vs. karate.
It’s about what people don’t see before they get hit.
I get where the question comes from.
And if you’ve asked it yourself — it’s not your fault.
You see our classic Negotiator stance and think:
“I’d blast him up the middle.”
Or you see the full SPEAR position and think:
“He's open for an uppercut.”
Right. I see that. But in a demo, everything is wide open. (And even more so in a picture!)
There’s a counter to every stance.
A move for every move.
But that’s not real violence — that’s choreography.
I recorded this video at a police training event 17 years ago — Seventeen years.
The info is still relevant and still misunderstood.
Watch the video and how I demo and explain how the SPEAR System® manages distance, sudden violence, and even the so-called “straight punch” — in the context where it actually happens.
If you have an “aha” moment while watching — good. That’s your cue to go deeper.
So pleeeease let me help you level up your self-defense IQ. Because learning more techniques won’t make you safer if you don’t have a system to manage the pre-fight, in-fight, and post-fight.
