If The Attacker Moves First, You Move Second. Period.
ACTION IS FASTER THAN REACTION: Why Physics Matters.
During a sudden attack, your opponent represents ACTION.
What you do next is REACTION.
Action is faster than reaction.
The attacker is always ‘action’ and at a physiological level, that’s a real problem.
What’s the answer? Stay with me on this one, it might be my favorite explanation of why complex motor skills (techniques) are NOT the best choice!
SOME SCIENCE MATTERS, BUT VIOLENT SCENARIOS ARE NOT LAB TESTS!
There are a lot of papers and studies measuring reaction times.
They’re interesting for sure, but the problem with most studies is that there is ALWAYS ACP present during the experiment.
You remember ACP, right?
Awareness, Consent & Preparation.
Measuring data is interesting and important, but none of the studies measure a true response time.
How can I be so sure?
Because even if the stimulus in the experiment is a surprise… the experiment was NOT!
ACP.
Studies are controlled, real violence is out-of-control!
What do you think would happen to reaction time if the danger were real?
What if the experiment happened outside the training room, with no gear, no safety check, and no waiver signed?
Wouldn't that add milliseconds, if not seconds, to reaction time? And seconds count during a violent encounter.
"Twenty-one milliseconds may seem like a tiny difference, and it probably wouldn't save you in a Wild West duel because your brain takes around 200 milliseconds to respond to what your opponent is doing. But it could mean the difference between life and death when you are trying to avoid an oncoming bus." CBC Study
When someone is attacked in the street, at home, in a carjacking, at an ATM, etc., that attack is already in motion.
And if it's a close-quarter attack, there is no way to counter with complex motor skills.
There is no time to think, process, select, adapt…
“Your brain takes around 200 milliseconds to respond to what your opponent is doing.” CBC Reaction Study
No research study supports this.
No surveillance video supports this either.
You need something else.
“Startle is a fast response to sudden, intense stimuli and probably protects the organism from injury by a predator or by a blow.” PubMed
The SPEAR System® relies on the speed of neurophysiology.
It uses the non-conscious startle response - which is faster than ANY complex motor skill to protect the head and push away danger.
Here’s useful data:
The blink of the eye which is the reflex of the orbicularis oculi muscle was found to have a latency of about 20 to 40 milliseconds.
Out of larger body parts, the head is quickest in movement latency in a range from 60 to 120 milliseconds.
The neck then moves almost simultaneously with a latency of 75 to 121 milliseconds.
Next, the shoulder jerks at 100 to 121 milliseconds along with the arms at 125 to 195 milliseconds. Lastly the legs respond with a latency of 145 to 395 milliseconds.
This type of cascading response correlates to how the synapses travel from the brain and down the spinal cord to activate each motor neuron.[8]” WIKI Startle Response
With SPEAR, we are using the speed of ALL THE startle response systems.
We are not waiting for the brain to catch up!
NON-CONSCIOUS SURVIVAL REFLEXES ARE SO MUCH FASTER.
Literally and psychologically, they are more supportive as the movement is aligned with fear and danger.
SPEAR is the only physical protective reaction that you DO NOT need to learn or summon because it deploys for you independent of conscious thought. Now how cool is that?
The trick is learning to weaponize the flinch…
We got you - we figured that out in the 80s and have been waiting for you to discover us.
To better appreciate how this works, watch this video from our ARCHIVES. (Pre-tattoos and 20 lbs lighter). 🤦♂️
There's a ton of info compressed in just 3 minutes.
The idea of building our protective response around our instinctive survival system hit me in the 80s like a sledgehammer and we’ve been refining it ever since!
I used to refer to our system as “behaviorally inspired - genetically wired!”
There is nothing faster than your flinch response.
Watch this video.
It's a powerful visual for the one move that might save your ass during a sudden attack.
We’ve lovingly coined it “The Biological Airbag” and it is truly the simplest, safest, and most reliable tactic for sudden self-defense.
As I wrote earlier:
If you want to be safer, the trick is learning to weaponize your flinch…
Identified in the 80s - refined over 3 decades.

This is SO brilliant. Working WITH nature is always better than working against nature.
Took me a long time to figure that out!
