For over four decades, I’ve been obsessed with one thing: how fear shapes movement, mindset, and survival.
That’s me in the early 80s—a young man with a crazy dream of changing the world.
Back then, I had this radical idea: create a self-defense system based on how people really moved when they were scared. Not how they trained in a dojo. Not how they performed in a ring. But how their bodies actually reacted in the chaos of sudden violence.
What I discovered shocked me.
My background in wrestling, boxing, and Taekwondo had almost no positive effect on my ability to manage real-world violence. Those skills were great for consensual fights—sparring, competition, even what I call a “douchebag fight” (the kind that happens for no reason other than ego or pride). But when it came to sudden, emotional, chaotic attacks?
Fear always hijacked performance.
Psychological fear distorted decision-making and crippled movement. That realization changed my life’s trajectory. I devoted myself to understanding fear—and teaching others how to manage it.
After 40+ years of research, teaching, and coaching, here are 10 lessons that have stood the test of time:
1. Fear Isn’t the Enemy. It’s the Teacher.
We’re taught to suppress fear, to be “fearless.” That’s bullshit. You can’t be brave if you’re not afraid. Courage isn’t the absence of fear—it’s the mastery of it. Fear is a biological survival signal. When you learn to listen to it instead of running from it, it becomes your greatest ally. A secret weapon that fuels you instead of freezing you.
2. Clarity Beats Confidence.
Confidence is fleeting. It can be shattered in an instant by the right punch, the right words, the right failure. Clarity, on the other hand, is unshakable. When you know your “why”—your purpose, your mission—the “how” always shows up. Clarity is the anchor that holds you steady in the storm.
3. The People Around You Define Your Altitude.
When I left my family’s business to chase this dream, my first wife asked, “How are you going to do that?” The words had barely left her lips when I knew we wouldn’t make it. A year later, we were divorced. Your circle determines your trajectory. Surround yourself with people who believe in your vision—not those who question it before you’ve even begun.
4. Your Partner Must Believe in Your Purpose.
If your partner doesn’t believe in your mission, you’ll fight two battles: one outside in the world, and one at home. My wife, Jesse, and I have been together for over 30 years. She has been instrumental in building and growing this company. Her belief in our mission has been my rock. Find someone who builds with you, dreams with you, rises with you.
5. Integrity Compounds.
Like money, integrity compounds over time. It’s built through slow, steady, and consistent action—keeping your word when no one’s watching, doing the right thing when it’s hard. Integrity is the foundation of trust and the bedrock of a meaningful life. It’s unshakable.
6. Adversity Is Feedback, Not Failure.
Every setback, every challenge, every moment of adversity is a lesson in disguise. It’s how you develop resilience, grit, and the mental toughness to persevere. Adversity isn’t a sign to quit—it’s a sign to learn. The obstacle is the way.
7. Movement Is Mental.
The body follows the mind. If your mind is scattered, your movements will be hesitant. If your mind is clear and focused, your body will respond with speed and precision. This is true in a fight, in business, and in life. Train your mind first; the body will follow.
8. Stay Curious. Arrogance Kills Growth.
The moment you think you know it all is the moment you stop growing. Arrogance is a growth-killer. Stay curious, stay humble, and never stop learning. The world is a classroom, and every experience—every failure, every success, every conversation—is a lesson.
9. Protect Your Peace. Not Every Fight Deserves Your Energy.
Your energy is a finite resource. Not every battle is worth fighting. Not every critic deserves a response. Not every provocation requires a reaction. Learn to discern what deserves your energy and what you should walk away from. Protecting your peace is a superpower.
10. Surround Yourself with Good Humans.
After all these years, I finally have a team that reflects everything I ever dreamed of: maturity, ethics, initiative, and heart. People who believe in the mission: to honor the body’s survival system and make good humans safer, sooner.
LFG!
