Physiology First. Then Physicality.
Physiology First. Then Physicality.
Most training programs build your body. Very few prepare your nervous system.
That gap — between physical skill and physiological readiness — is where most people get hurt in a real confrontation.
In the SPEAR System®, we close that gap on purpose.
The Problem Nobody Talks About
In a real confrontation, you are [initially] off-balance — emotionally, psychologically, and physically. All three. Simultaneously. Before you’ve even processed what’s happening.
There’s a name for this: the Psychological Refractory Period — the measurable gap between your brain receiving a threat stimulus and your body being able to execute a response. Under real stress, that gap widens. You freeze. You hesitate. You’re late.
And here’s what makes it worse: you’re not just fighting the threat. You’re fighting fear at the same time.
Most training ignores this entirely. Ours is built around it.
What We Do Differently
We train “off-balance on purpose.” Odd angles. Feigning flinches. Injecting fear into every drill. To some, it doesn’t look very technical.
Good.
Real violence doesn’t look technical either.
🎯 You can only move when you’re ready to.
🎯 You can only hit the target that’s available. (CWCT: Closest Weapon to Closest Target.)
🎯 Speed is irrelevant without suddenness — and suddenness requires training in the refractory gap between stimulus and response.
🎯 In a true confrontation, it’s your suddenness that matters most.
When you train the startle-flinch response — when you learn to convert that involuntary biological reaction into a tactical counter — you’re not just learning a technique. You’re rewiring how your nervous system responds to danger.
“Tapping into the speed of physiology improves your reaction time — and it accelerates your personal speed.”
Physiology first. Then physicality. That’s behaviorally sound. That’s the SPEAR System®.
This video clip will give you a snapshot of what to expect if you attend a Be Your Own Bodyguard® a class, training camp, or an in-person certification.
I run this type of training every week. I share these insights every week, too.
If this resonates — if you’ve been wondering why your training doesn’t feel like it would hold up when it counts — this is why. And there’s a fix.
