The acronym for S.P.E.A.R. didn’t start off as an acronym at first - that came almost 6 years after I started developing the system!
Originally it was simply a visual metaphor to help my students commit to the counterintuitive decision to charge the threat!
Impale the attack!
In the video below, I share the story of the original name and why I called the move the SPEAR.
My original martial objective was to jam the brachial tie-in, a small target near the shoulder that would prevent a punch from successfully reaching its intended target - listen carefully in the video you’ll understand how that fixation led to an error that led to a major tactical correction that inspired the full SPEAR as we know it today!
In the video, I get into:
The origin of the SPEAR as a tactic
The original technique of ‘Palm to Shoulder’ & How it morphed into the Spear
How “Pain is the Mother of Invention” inspired the development of the system
Charging a threat isn’t easy. So how did I get my students to do it? I share a colorful, but effective visual that helped my students move toward the danger. The expression “the tip of the spear” takes on new meaning when you hear this story! 😬
Hope you dig it.
