The Swiss Army Knife Of Self-Defense
THE SWISS ARMY KNIFE OF SELF-DEFENSE
Over the last 35 years, I have designed a personal safety system around the human body’s natural response to sudden danger.
PART I
Imagine a single move that can jam a headlock, a bear hug, or a tackle...
Imagine if that movement was built off of an intuitive, hard-wired, DNA-level movement tied to your survival system.
Imagine if you could learn to apply it within 15 minutes.
It works for empty-hand situations or with weapons.
It works when it's one-on-one or against multiple assailants.
The SPEAR Tactic is a multi-purpose tool! *It really is the Swiss Army Knife of Self-Defense!
The movement in the video below is called the Half SPEAR.
It's the centerpiece of the SPEAR System® and is built off the body's 'startle-flinch' response and cross-extensor reflex.
We have effectively figured out how to ‘weaponize the flinch’.

This is the SPEAR Flow Drill.
Often when we post content like this we have people comment about where I’m open, or what ‘they’ could've done.
WARNING FOR “INTERNET” EXPERTS
Please remember: This is ONLY a drill used to develop awareness for the flexor vs extensor dance that results from a sudden clinch when intercepting a sucker punch, tackle, etc. It’s just a drill 😉
WATCH THIS EYES-CLOSED VERSION - ADVANCED SPEAR FLOW
This is one of our isolation drills that helps the practitioner develop and trust their tactile sense at extreme close quarters.
This is very important for sudden confrontations where the startle-flinch intercepts, or after a quick sucker punch where your eyes are still watering (from a punch, finger, etc.), and even in low light situations.
Developing responsive movement to sudden changes in your opponent's energy is critical during any clinch, be it street, law enforcement, or sport fighting. And working with your eyes closed is a great way to develop this skill.
Weaponizing the 'startle-flinch' response will significantly improve your odds in any violent encounter.
PART II
Your Survival System Knows Best.
Learning to Flow
Neuroscientists and sports psychologists talk of the 'flow state'.
“Flow” is a state of mind – achieved when athletes feel completely engaged in their performance, lose their perception of time, concentrate on the moment (without distraction or dilution), and, perform at extremely high levels.
It's a mindset that [obviously] requires a skillset to support it.
But what if your body already ‘knows flow’?
Integrating the intersection of physiology, physics, and psychology produces flow.
And that's the goal of the SPEAR Flow Drill.
This SPEAR FLOW DRILL nurtures the following:
Startle-flinch conversion
Kinesthetic perception
Proprioception
Balance
Agility
Coordination
Isotonic Strengthening
As you progress with the exercise you begin to add:
Diffusing Vision (scan for other threats, improvised weapons, exit routes)
Target Awareness (In advanced drills we begin throwing counters)
MUCH MORE ADVANCED APPLICATIONS OF THIS FOUNDATIONAL DRILL
(From a seminar in Italy).
Remember...
THESE ARE JUST DRILLS
Don't lose sight of the message if you see an opening.
There's always an opening 😏
Stay safe,
