World-Class MMA Athlete Vs Untrained Fighter: Who Wins?
When the rules change, our skills can change.
Just because you're skilled in one arena doesn't mean it will easily be transferable to another arena…
Being a competent martial artist doesn't secure or ensure victory during a real street attack.
In 2020, world-class MMA star Anthony Smith and his family experienced a home invasion.
I’m paraphrasing, but Anthony said that that fight, against a much smaller opponent, was in many ways, harder than any of his previous battles against trained fighters. How is that possible??
Anthony and I linked up shortly after the event and recorded this podcast. It was one of my most downloaded talks ever and with the rash of violence lately, I felt it was an important conversation to re-share and share with new readers.
We covered a lot, from his personal feelings about the event to what was going on in his mind during the actual fight.
Some of his observations are very important to YOU. There were assumptions made and he was surprised by the attacker's strength and resilience. Because of the amount of research I’ve done on fear and movement, I was able to share thoughts and observations on how our 'emotional & psychological' systems affect energy & skill.
Remember this quote from my article “The Theory of Presumed Compliance”:
“How we feel affects how we think. How we think affects how we feel. Both influence how we move.”
The goal isn't to criticize anybody or anything, but to help us all realize something I've shared for a long time, "violence doesn't care what martial art you study".
Remember this:
When the rules change, our skills can change.
Just because you're skilled in one arena doesn't mean it will easily be transferable to another arena…
Being a competent martial artist doesn't secure or ensure victory during a real street attack.
When we understand the factors that impact our nervous system and our psychology, we can train differently, and run scenario-specific training to create better adaptation, so we are better mentally prepared should we find ourselves in a serious violent encounter.
I hope you find this podcast informational, educational, inspirational, and, most importantly, that you step away from it realizing that we all have holes in our systems and preparedness.
I share this for our safety: we all need to assess and adapt continuously.
Like the wise Tim Kennedy says, "If the day ever comes that you have to fight for your life the only thing that will determine the outcome is if you ever trained and prepared for that fight."
Now comes the big question…what will we do with this new knowledge?
Stay safe,
Coach Blauer
