"It's not how well you play your best shot that matters, it's how well you play your worst shot."
- Tom Watson, PGA Professional
I love that quote.
You may be wondering what a golf quote has to do with self-defense…
Well, this one does, because our mind controls our body, and if we can’t control what we are thinking about, then that will dilute our focus.
We are either fixating or focusing. And this ‘idea’ is much bigger than ‘semantics.’
Here’s an example you can probably relate to: Think of a time you were sparring when you had a sudden lapse in focus and got punched in the face hard.
If you continued to think about that shot, you probably got hit - again - almost immediately.
And then you found yourself back peddling, hesitating, doubting yourself.
The reason for this is that at some level you were thinking about your LAST shot.
Fixating on failure prevents you from capitalizing on opportunity.
This applies to sparring, real self-defense, business, relationships - pretty much everything.
So many of us fixate on our mistakes, we carry negative memories, worrying about the thing we did yesterday (or 10 years ago), and how that will mess up the thing we're about to try.
We all need to be careful of when a [negative] experience from the past influences our future.
The past and future are only connected by a moment in time - and it’s literally NOW!
Now can you let go of that punch you just blocked with your nose and get back in the fight?
Our minds play curious games with our confidence.
IMO at the root of every moment of doubt and hesitation is an imagined fear scenario in your mind.
It doesn't need to be about physical 'violence' - it can be anything you're not sure of and are worried about.
👉 Dump the excess baggage, the weight of 'imagined' fear and you will travel faster.

==> Don’t make the same mistake most make - and that’s to wait. As the expression goes, time waits for no one. 4x a year I run a very effective coaching program where I share insights on performance psychology, leveraging fear, personal defense, and self-awareness. If you’d like me to coach you, this is a great opportunity. Our next program is starting soon, if you’d like more info, click this link.
For my golfers out there, you’ll enjoy this clip. For those of you who don’t golf, consider the connection managing fear has on most major decisions in your life. FYI, I worked with Grayson 2x and he won both tournaments he played right after our sessions.
Wishing Grayson the best of skill and luck this week as he’s playing in his first Masters tournament!
Fixating or FOCUSING! love it, this thinking has helped me tremendously. Thank you!
